Thank you from Pitt Meadows
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: Dear Mayor Pieper,
My name is Connor and my class and I would like to thank you for sending us a letter telling us all about your city. My class was very surprised to get a letter from a real mayor. We had been running every day to get to your town because we all really like cheese and thought it would be a good place to go. Our Armstrong Day was fantastic. We ate lots of grilled cheese sandwiches and talked about what we learned about your town. We spent a lot of time on the Armstrong sites and we saw lots of pictures and got
lots of information. Thank you very much and my teacher thanks you too.
Yours Truly,
Connor from Pitt Meadows Elementary School

Not just a grocery store
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: Recently, a family was looking to relocate in the north Okanagan area. Looking at various communities, they ended up purchasing a home in Armstrong. Their mortgage broker remarked that the friendly staff and helpful folks at Askew's Foods was the reason the family chose to make their home here. The staff are great community supporters - not only through store committments, but also in their personal lives. Many of the staff are involved in local sports, such as Lacrosse - and living here, they want Armstrong to be the best place to live and raise a family. Thank you Askew's for making Armstrong a community!

Armstrong Shamrocks
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry: Lacrosse will always be the raison d'etre for Armstrong. Our team won the BC Juvenile "A" lacrosse championship in 1950. Probably the best group of young athletes that ever emerged onto the provincial sporting scene. Of course I'm biased but the truth of the matter is that over the years Armstrong's young (and old) lacrosse players have more than held their own in Okanagan and provincial skirmishes. Highlight in the year 2000 at a Homecoming reunion was an oldtimers game featuring most of the noted players who had wielded the hickory over many, many years.

why Armstrong is great?
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry:
I can tell you why:
Armstrong is great because is has everything you need, clothes stores, general stores, food stores, library, coffee shops, quilt shops, parks, skating arenas, schools from kinder garden to high school, etc.
It doesn’t have many people but it has some, its close to Vernon (a bigger place), Salmon Arm, Kamloops, etc.
One of the best things is that we have all we need to do exercise, something essential for a healthy life. Often described as “The Best Place to Live”.
Swimming= Walking=
Football= Running=
Riding= Skating=
Dancing= Biking=

whats great about Arstrong.
Date: Dec 15, 2009
Entry:
Armstrong is famous for its cheese; you could say it really knows how to cut the cheese. Armstrong has lots of other educational and sporty things like two elementary schools, one middle school and a high school. It has an IPE, a skate park and a swimming pool which they are rebuilding to make it better. The good people of Armstrong also have a town hall, an art museum and a tennis court. At school you can join a basketball team, a volleyball team, a golf team, a chess club. There’s cross country, soccer and rugby\football. I think Armstrong deserves to win because it is awesome for its many things to do. THE END!!!

Winter Riding
Date: Dec 14, 2009
Entry: Sitting inside the Junction Cafe, I noticed a group of riders coming down the railway right-of-way one Sunday. Curious to know if this was a one-time event or an ongoing event, I stopped a rider and asked. They were members of the Armstrong Enderby Riding Club established in 1966, and this ride was part of their Winter Riding program. Every Sunday in February and March from 10 - noon the group meets at the fairgounds - and depending on the weather, rides inside at the Agriplex or enjoys the beautiful winter weather and rides through the community. Only in Armstrong would you see horses downtown!

A new tradition?
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Entry: Principal of Armstrong Elementary School Jodi van der Meer writes: "We had a nice time last night and left Abbeyfield feeling very good. We came up with the idea at a Certified Education Assistants meeting this fall. The staff had met and, because we have worked together for many years, didn't want to do the typical "Christmas" get together and add one more thing to our plates. So we decided it would be nice to give something back to the community. We were trying to come up with something we could do together. Typical things like soup kitchens were discussed and then I suggested Abbeyfield, knowing that it would be low key and appreciated. So we connected with house manager Esther Webb, who was very enthusiastic. We set up a date for cooking and then joined the 10 senior residents for dinner. We cooked tortellini soup and made Skor bar trifle on Wednesday and then biscuits on Thursday. Our First Nations support worker and her mom delivered baked bannock. Then we reheated and delivered the meal to Abbeyfield. It was nice to visit and share a meal together."

Parcel tax helps Armstrong recreation
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Entry: Armstrong residents will see their taxes go up by about $20 per year in 2010 after council unanimously passed a new tax bylaw to help recreation infrastructure funds. The newly created recreational parcel tax will be used to help build a reserve fund of about $42,000. The money would be used for recreational infrastructure on items that require upgrades or replacement. The city, in the past, has scrambled to match grant money received for such items as the new arena and new swimming pool. The new recreation parcel tax will give council a reserve fund aimed strictly at recreation infrastructure. As Armstrong has roughly 2,100 parcels of land, the parcel tax is put in place instead of assessing residents on their assessment rates.

Armstrong banquet is open to all
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Entry: Being raised by a single mom, Jeannette Waight remembers how appreciative she felt when they were invited to a Christmas party. With that memory in mind, Waight, along with her husband, Pat, is a driving force behind one big Christmas party in Armstrong. The fifth annual Armstrong Community Banquet, with help from Armstrong Ministerial, the City of Armstrong, Township of Spallumcheen and Armstrong-Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce, takes place Thursday, Dec. 17, at 5:30 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Hall.
“It was rare for me and my mom to get invited out to a party, so when we did, we’d get really dressed up,” said Jeannette, who moved with Pat to Armstrong nine years ago. “I suppose that is what has placed this dream into my very soul. Not everybody gets to go to a Christmas party, and I want people from all stations of life to have a Christmas party they will remember all year long.” Waight says it doesn't matter if you’re single or have a family, rich or poor. The banquet is open to everyone. Friends Serving Friends is the official theme. “I can’t think of a better term,” said Waight. “The servers are all dressed in black and white, and serve everyone with laughter and joy and a joke or two.” Getting people to help with the dinner isn’t a problem. “My biggest thing is trying to take care of all the volunteers,” said Waight. “This is such an awesome community. I have never lived where people care about each other so much.”
Truer words have never been spoken!

Everybody's talking about Lucy
Date: Dec 10, 2009
Entry: Ask any young person in Armstrong and area if they’ve heard of Lucy, and most will nod their head, and say “yeah, they rock.” To those who grew up in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Lucy is, in fact, Armstrong band Lucy and the Lucky Four, four young men who have an affinity for playing Boomer-era blues rock –– think The Who, Cream, Led Zepp... you get the idea. Lucy’s audience is growing beyond age-defined borders and their sound has grown a lot from when they first started about a year and a half ago developing a cohesive funky sound but stepping outside of a single genre and taking aspects of other music such as reggae, classic rock and blues into their song writing. It was at a party where 17-year-old Marcetta met guitarist Liam, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Armstrong’s Pleasant Valley Secondary. Laim had formed a band along with his classmates, bassist Levi and lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Shane , and they happened to be looking for a drummer. After forming, the band started to think about a name. And for those thinking Lucy must be a sister or girlfriend, think again - Lucy is a two foot-tall chess piece, a knight from Shane’s older brother before they actually named the band Lucy and the Lucky Four. They decided to name it Lucy for some unknown reason. Lucy definitely came with some luck –– and talent. After playing their inaugural show at the Our Kids Have Talent contest, where they placed third, the boys earned a spot to perform at Vernon’s Rarearth Jazz and Blues Festival, sharing the venue along with guitar heroes Buddy Guy and Jimmy Bowskill. With that came dozens of live shows, ranging from weddings, parks, cafés, private parties, festivals, and then one special date in their hometown. After entering the Interior Provincial Exhibition’s Canadian Youth Talent Search, the band ended up winning first place, which included an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the finals in P.E.I last month. They didn’t place in the top-three, but felt that they played really well and learned a lot from the experience. They had an amazing time and made some great friends and met some incredibly talented people. The luck continues. Signed to play the Nakusp Music Festival next year, the band has also just released a six-song CD with all original material. Recorded locally, the he album features first single E.C., which has rec ived regular play on YouTube and MySpace with close to 1,500 hits in the past two weeks. With their vision set to the future, the four Lucky members plan to stick together after graduation, and may move on to more cement pastures.
