Shamrocks sponsor rec lacrosse

Entry: The Armstrong Shamrocks are sponsoring the 2009-10 Recreational Drop in Lacrosse program at the Hassen Memorial Arena. “This is non-contact lacrosse and is open to players of any skill level,” said Ryan Nitchie of the provincial senior C silver-medalist Shamrocks. “The season will run on Wednesday nights starting October 7.” The only equipment players need is a helmet with a facemask, gloves and clean runners. Cost this year is only $30 for the whole season, which runs until Feb. 10. Goalies are free and there is no credit this year with all senior and junior Shamrocks required to pay. “If interest is as strong as last year, we may look at adding an additional night,” noted Nitchie.

Entry: We are proud to support Ryan Nitchie, who is preparing to head down to the games as a volunteer. Ryan is a busy dad who also finds time to be very active with our local Lacrosse league - as well as being a City of Armstrong Councillor. Ryan also recieved the Go Getter Award for Customer Service in 2009, so we think those he assists at the Games will be in good hands! Thanks for volunteering Ryan.

Torchbearer Kit

Entry: Did you know, when you are selected as a torchbearer, you get more than just the clothes? I got my torchbearer kit, with the expected toque, mittens, jacket and pants. Even more exciting was the rest- a cheer kit! This kit contains many things. There are flags for my friends and family to wave, and a sticker to put on my window or car. There is also a light-up Coke bottle. And the coolest by far is the banner, which reads "I Love My Torchbearer" and zips up the sides to form a re-usable bag! It also has a pocket for a picture to go in and a place to write my name on it. My family are all arguing over who gets to hold it...hehe. I also, a couple months ago got an official Torchbearer t-shirt. The even better part of all these things is that most are made of recycled materials and/or are recyclable themselves. See you at the run!!

Entry: We are thrilled to be supporting our daughter, Sara Pieper, as she prepares to carry the torch during its run through Armstrong January 26th. Sara has always been involved in sports - hockey, softball - you name it, she has tried it. Way to go Sara! We will be cheering loud and hard for you - and for our Canadian athletes during the games.

Torchbearer Essay

Entry: As part of my torchbearer selection process, I had to write a mini essay on either how I live active, or how I contribute to the environment. I went with athletic, and here is the essay that helped me become an Olympic Torchbearer!!
Whether it is figure skating, soccer, karate, horseback riding, marching band, softball, or any other activity that comes my way, I am there, frequently with my nieces and nephew in tow! After all, I enjoy all these activities immensely, so it is only fair that they get a chance to try them too. Sometimes I am just the taxi, but most of the time I am involved as well because I believe in leading by example. Furthermore, I am always willing to try new activities and improve my skills in old ones. And I do not let being asthmatic stop me!
As part of living active, I assistant coach at my local figure skating club and coach local youth soccer teams. In addition, I am staff for a marching band and enjoy passing on the skills I learned from it. In all of these activities, my coaching/teaching philosophy is twofold: Play for fun and work on improving yourself. I believe the only way kids will continue to be active their whole lives is if they enjoy the activity. The second half of my philosophy is echoed in the Olympic motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius – Faster, Higher, Stronger.
With a “glowing heart” I stay active, encourage others to do the same, and Live Olympic on the Coke Side of Life!

Selection to Carry the Torch!

Entry: I was selected to carry the Olympic Torch!!!!!!!!! (The number of exclamation marks should begin to indicate how excited I am). It is going to be incredible to be a part of Olympic history! Unfortunately, I am not running in Armstrong, because in order to increase my chances of carrying the torch, I applied to several runs. So I will be carrying the torch the day after it is in Armstrong, as it passes through Salmon Arm. My friends and family are all coming! I am also excited to participate in the activities that are taking place in Armstrong. See you there!!

Ball Hockey 101

Entry: Ball Hockey is a fairly new sport in our community - so I decided to check out a couple of games. This is a fast-paced sport that requires skill to score. Here is what I have learned - and who knows - maybe one day, Ball Hockey will be a Winter Olympic event!
The object of the game quite simply is to strike the ball with the hockey stick and knock it into the opponent's hockey net (6 feet wide x 4 feet high, 1.83 m x 1.22 m) Typically a low-bounce type of ball is used. For added safety, hockey gloves and helmuts are recommended, and in fact are mandatory for play in our member leagues.
Any size or type of non-slip flooring can be used as a playing field. In Canada, most of our leagues operate in hockey arenas or gymnasiums. All CBHA provincial, regional and national events are held in full sized hockey arenas (generally around 200 feet long x 85 feet wide, 60.96 m x 25.91 m). When played on the surface of a hockey rink, six players, including the goalie, compete against the opposing team's six players. Extra players are usually kept on each bench, outside the playing surface, and interchanged with the six on the floor either during play or at a stoppage of play.
When played on smaller surfaces, fewer players can be used during play. In its simplest form, the game can be played without floor markings and few rules. However, in organized competition regular ice hockey floor markings are used, including goal lines, goal creases, blue lines, center line, face-off circles and neutral zone face-off dots.The following are additional rules:
• Face-offs (players are lined up facing each other in a designated area on the floor), are used at the start of each period of play and after goals, penalties, icing, offside, or when the ball leaves the playing area.
• Penalties are called when a player commits a foul. The offending player is then removed from playing for a period of time, depending on the severity of the infraction and the team continues play one player short until the penalty has elapsed.
• When an offside occurs Play is stopped. Before entering an opponent team's zone (the area from behind their net to their blue line) the ball must cross the blue line first before the player or any of his teammates.
• Icing (or flooring) occurs when a team shoots the ball before the shooting player physically crosses the center line and the ball passes the opponent's goal line before any player, of either team, can touch it. A stoppage of play shall occur with the ensuing faceoff taking place in the end zone of the team that shot the ball. If the goalie touches the ball, or the shot creates a goal, there is no icing on the play.
• "Floating Blue Line": expansion of the offensive zones occurs once a team crosses the opponent's blue line with the ball. The attacking team will then have half of the entire playing surface within which to control the ball, from behind the opponent's goal to the center line of the area. If the defending team sends the ball past center, the zone is reset to the blue line and their opponent must regain it as explained above.
• To score a legal goal, it cannot be kicked in; nor struck with a stick above the shoulders; nor pushed in using the hand, nor while offside.Games may vary in length, but are generally played with either two or three periods of equal time, example 10 or 15 minute periods. Where a time clock is available, there is a stoppage in play, after a goal, penalty, offside, icing, ball out of play, or goaltender holding the ball for more than a few seconds. If a clock is not available, or the time available to play is limited, running time periods may be used, for example three 15 minute periods.

Entry: I always find it interesting when driving with my wife she will see someone walking with their dog and she says to me... look that is Bell and her owner. To which I ask and the guys name is? My wife says, I don't know I only know the dogs name. Why I ask? Well she says when I am out walking our dog we owners pause on the street to chat and allow our dogs to greet...we know the dogs names we just don't know each others name...LOLOL!!!

Entry: Laurie Williams and Brook Mahon know the fastest way to get something done is to just pitch in and do it! Laurie and Brook volunteered time on Sunday to help with the scarve cutting bee, and they both can be found volunteering in other ways in the community. The Armstrong Food Iniative, Armstrong Active Transportation Plan, 2010 Torch Run Community Committee, Active Communities, and the Community Garden are just a few of the ways they support our community through volunteerism. During the 2010 Torch Run, you will find Laurie helping with the community dance and during the Games, you will probably find them watching the event at our live site - and cheering on our Canadian athletes! Thanks Laurie and Brook for your volunteer efforts and your spirit!
