Dancer refuses to give up on dream
Date: Jan 4, 2010
Entry: Jolene Kutzner of Armstrong is ready to dance her way to Manitoba to attend the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s teacher training program. Jolene Kutzner has danced ballet since the age of four. Her love of the art has never faded, and has inspired her to achieve her dream. Earlier this year, Kutzner auditioned for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to attend its teacher training program, and in October she found out she was accepted.
“She has quite the accomplishments behind her, not to mention the enthusiasm,” said her current dance instructor, Susan Bensmiller of Armstrong’s Susan Paisley School of Dance. Kutzner, whose future goal is to one day instruct dance in her hometown, is about to embark on the three-year course, which is university transferable as a teachable minor within a bachelor of education from the University of Winnipeg. She leaves in the summer to follow her dream. Kutzner studied the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) syllabus at the Okanagan School of Ballet for 13 years, and entered into ballet examinations, including the intermediate level. A former student of Pleasant Valley Secondary School, she also studied in the school’s prestigious dance program and was on the adrenaline dance team. Kutzner has participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival and other competitions, along with summer dance camps. She has most recently been studying the Cecchetti style of ballet, under the direction of Bensmiller. “I love this style of ballet. The elegant flow and movements are challenging and beautiful,” said Kutzner, who is now preparing to take her intermediate examination in this method. “Mrs. Bensmiller is a really inspiring and awesome teacher. She is very encouraging and positive. She helped me be the dancer I am today. I am totally grateful for her guidance, without which, I would not have gotten through the audition.” The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is not Kutzner’s only audition this year. During the summer she auditioned for the Arts Umbrella, however, she was not accepted. “I was so nervous and didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “It’s good to be exposed to different techniques and styles of dance. There are so many styles used in auditions. I saw Russian technique and more Cecchetti. The more you are exposed to, the stronger a dancer you become. “Each style has something unique about it, like a certain way to place your arms and the use of your head. You see people that are (what you think) better dancers than yourself and you start doubting yourself.” Kutzner attended a workshop before the audition and says it helped her relax. “I got to see what they expected me to do. I found the workshop to be challenging and a great experience. “I have learned to believe in myself and the famous quote, ‘dance as if nobody is watching’ is true when it comes to auditions. You don’t know what they will ask you to do in audition. There are people judging you on your performance appeal.” Submitted by Susan Bensmiller
