Winter Carnival 2009

Entry: Twain Sullivan School braves frigid conditions for their annual Winter Carnival. Students and staff spent a day outside in December participating in several cool activities including a horse-drawn sleigh ride around the duck pond, sledding, snoeshoing, cross-country skiing, snow bowling and others... Everyone was ready for hot chocolate by the end!

Entry: A new Kiosk was built in Steel Head park to help visitiors know information about our area. There is a map of the town, surrounding area, pine beetle, map of the province, things to do and the history of Houston. It also contains bulletin board to post all the events happening in the community.

Houston Link to Learning

Entry: Houston Link to Learning offers many diffferent literacy programs, 2 very popular ones being the Community Kitchen and the Community Garden. Through the garden participants are able to come out and enjoy the outdoors while learning a variety of tasks from working the soil, planting seeds, weeding, caring for a garden bed and harvesting their end product. It's a very satisfying project according to many of the people involved and brings a real sense of accomplishment that continues year after year if one desires.
The kitchen is a wonderful place to share and learn. A week before a kitchen happens there is a committee meeting that takes place where the group decides what will be cooked, who will shop and discuss any other issues that may need to be addressed. Each kitchen participants prepare enough food for each family to take home 2-3 meals and then enjoy a lunch prepared on site. On average the Community kitchen feeds 16-18 families every 2 weeks and brings people together in the spirit of family and friendship.

moving back

Entry: reading these entries has inspired me to move back to Houston, to give back to the community that provided me with a solid upbringing. With all the sports enthusiasts, and the reminder of the many things to do, I am carting up my family and heading home to raise my kids in this supportive environment. I plan to volunteer with numerous local associations. Thanks Houston.

Taking our healthy living to heart!

Entry: This morning on my way into town, I had to slow down and let some of the highschool PE class cross the road on cross-country skis!! I am sure that some of them will continue to use the fitness skills they have learned in this class! With 6 months of winter and abundant snow as close as your own backyard, these young people are learning not only fitness, but the skill of using what is available to you in order to achieve fitness!! Take advantage of the winter, get out and enjoy it!!

Grizzles

Entry: While fishing the Babine River one weekend, we were treated to a spectacular show! A mama grizzly and her three cubs came out of the bush on the far side of the river and made their way down the shoreline towards us. The bears caused a family to scramble down the same shoreline and ultimately hide up underneath the bridge hoping the grizzlies would pass. It caused some tense moments but thankfully a conservation officer was nearby in case of danger. The bears made their way towards the bridge, then climbed up the bank and crossed the road. They then spent some time across the river from us doing some fishing themselves. Our friends who were visiting from Campbell River couldn't believe their luck and snapped these awesome photos.
