Why Houston is special to me ...
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Some random thoughts, brought to you by some of Houston's teenagers...
**In Houston, you can walk anywhere in town (even if you live a few minutes out of town).
**Some of our athletes are on provincial/national levels.
**Despite our small numbers, our highschool choir was able to participate in Carolfest, and we put on a phenomenal show.
**You know everyone here, or know someone who knows someone (so everyone has to be nice)!!
**In Houston, everyone is accepted!!
**You can pretty much do any sport here that is available, in a bigger centre you could probably only do one sport.
**Houston is great because of the open land we have to cross country ski, snowmobile, and sled, right in our backyards!!
**People here care for each other. During my elementary years, a boy in my grade had cancer. Our school held fundraisers to help support payment for cancer treatments.
**I love that everyone knows everyone and its kind of like having an extended family that looks after each other.
**Its great because I can play on a Northern AA ringette team and even now, a year later, everyone still says 'hi'.

Small towns, a lot of choices
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Houston is a great place for healthy living! I have 3 children, all with different interests. In the winter my oldest plays hockey & basketball, my middle child plays hockey & participates in Taekwon Do, and my youngest plays ringette. They all enjoy swimming & soccer in the spring & summer. If these don't appeal to you there is also baseball, figure skating, rugby, numerous fitness facilities, karate, curling, and many more. Houston is a small town, but has a lot to offer!

Healthy Options for People and the Earth (HOPE)
Date: Jan 6, 2010
Entry: Houston is great place to live because of groups like HOPE. HOPE consists of a group of activists, concerned citizens, and business owners who share some common goals and philosophies. We define ourselves as an inclusive cross-cultural participatory collective, working together for a healthy balanced local community. Our goals are as follows:
1. We build and nurture the potential for social and environmental change.
2. We create a safe climate for learning and community engagement.
3. We develop partnerships to foster prosperity in our community.
HOPE is the amalgamation of the Houston Green Team, the Recycling Committee, and the Houston Community Garden Committee. The projects HOPE are currently responsible for or partners to deliver are The Pleasant Valley Farmers Market, The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako (RDBN) Recycling Initiative, the Houston Community Garden, and (the Healthy Food and Beverage Initiative?).
•The Pleasant Valley Farmers Market is managed and operated by HOPE. The market is a venue for local artisan’s, clubs, and individuals to market their crafts, products, and produce. Houston Link to Learning (an agency for literacy) works in the market setting to assist individuals to develop a budget, a marketing strategy, and apply for necessary permits.
•HOPE is involved in the RDBN Recycling Initiative. HOPE has developed a funding proposal for a local recycling initiative in partnership with the RDBN, the District of Houston, and local businesses and agencies.
•HOPE now partners in the operation and management of Houston Link to Learning’s Houston Community Garden initiative including the annual Harvest Festival. The garden consists of 32 raised beds for family plots and a large in-the ground garden plot. Six of the raised beds are wheel chair accessible and 4 are tall enough that individuals with arthritis can access them more easily. Each person or family with a raised bed contributes to the development of the in-the-ground garden plot. Produce from this garden is donated to the Salvation Army Food Bank one week and sold at Pleasant Valley Community Market the next week. Individuals who have mobility challenges contribute by leading a workshop, cooking for workshops, or tutoring.
•HOPE is also working in partnership with the District of Houston on the Healthy Food and Beverage Initiative, which is currently critically analyzing vending machines within district facilities such as the recreation center (arena and pool). After we complete our information gathering and research it is our intention to make or vending machine food and drinks as healthy as possible.
