What is Houston
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Houston may be home to the world's largest fly rod and the world's largest Sawmill under one roof. It may be call the Steelhead Capital of the World, but it is my home. As I sit here tonight reading some of the post you have left me speechless and for those who know me that is an amazing feat. I have grown up in Houston, got married and have raised my family here. I have seen Houston go through its ups and down, but whenever someone is in need Houston is always there. We have had fires and floods and the volunteers have come out of the wood work to help out. If a family is suffering the town is there. I cannot think of a better place to call home than Houston. Thank you Houston for reminding me that I do live in the best town on Earth.

Skiing the Meadows
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: The Dungate Meadows are a lovely place to x-country ski. Shared with the snowmobile club, the two outdoor enthusiasts have views of lovely high elevation vistas, mixed with bush trails. A few years ago, an agreement was made with the snowmobile club for them to use their 'bombi' (the trailclearing machine) to keep some extra trails open, to an area where an experimental wind tower was being set up. What a unique idea!! MIxing outdoor horsepower recreation with green energy experiments! That's Houston, you never know what combinations will effectively co-exist!!

X-country skiing the Meadows
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: South east of town is a wide open natural meadow that stretches on for miles and miles, connecting a number of small lakes and creeks. Known as "Dungate Meadows" or simple "the Meadows", this area is not only popular among moose hunters for the last half a century, but it is home to a community cabin that is shared between x-country skiers and snowmobilers alike. The elevation is quite high, even though it is not yet alpine, and the snow conditions are stable through the entire winter season (which up there comes in October and stays sometimes into later May), making it a perfect location for the snowmobile club to have groomed trails. One of the most unique things to Houston is that the snowmobilers and the x-country skiers get along very well!! In many places, they would not cross paths, but here, they share the trails and sometimes the snowmobilers go out of their way to 'groom' deeper snow, just so the skiers have a good place to ski!!

So many things for activity and fun at the same time!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry:
As a proud grandmother I support my grandchildren in the variety of sports or hobbies they have chosen.
Minor hockey for two of them, ringette for another 2, girl's hockey for one, skating for one, playing a bass guitar in a band for another. The spring and summer brings swimming, soccer and baseball. The band is a year round activity. In addition to these activities, as familys they are out fishing, quadding, picnicing and generally having fun and enjoying themselves.
The library and its summer programs are enjoyed by all and there is the pool for them to develope their skills.!
I commend Houston as a well rounded community to keep our kids busy in a meaningful way and also is beneficial to overall health and exercise.

Hockey grandmas??
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Every town that has hockey, has hockey moms. Hockey moms are the greatest, they bring you to practice in the wee hours of the morning, when its freezing cold outside, after they spent all evening making sure your gear didn't crawl out of the bag on its own in the morning, they make sure all your gear is in your bag when you have to go on an overnight tournament (ever tried to score a goal with one skate?), hockey moms also know just how to give the right kind of hug when the game didn't go quite as well as you thought...
but HOCKEY GRANDMAS? Well, they're just downright perfect!! We have had two of the nicest senior ladies in town that have been, for as far back as I can remember (that's a long ways), die hard Luckies fans, ferocious minor hockey supporters, and don't you dare expect them to be anywhere else but in the stands when the little Luckies or initiation teams are playing!! If you didn't have your own grandma in town to come watch your game, you could always 'borrow' one of these ladies to make you feel special!
Sadly, one of the Grandma's passed away this summer, but knowing she'll never miss a game again makes us feel even more special!!

Artsy fartsy teacher meets hockey in Houston!!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: (Warning: please read this with a grin on your face...) As a piano teacher, I have often seen the time commitment and crazy passion families will place in having their kids in hockey as a nuisance... its impossible to schedule piano lessons until the hockey schedules are out, because hockey schedules will ALWAYS take precedence, they will travel to the ends of the earth (or at least half way around the province) for a 3 game tournament, only to turn around the next weekend and do it all over again, even though there are piano or music theory exams in a few days, and just when I think its time to do spring recital, I have to compete with spring training or early summer camp!! :) This 'no love affair' hasn't always been this way, I used to even 'rink rat' during public skating in my younger years at the local arena... lately, I thought it was bad in the city, where every kid thinks s/he's gonna make the NHL, but here, in Houston, oh my what will I ever do!!! BUT THEN!!!
Some crazy teacher contract commitment at the highschool requires the staff to compete with the grads on the ice, every year, without the option to say no, once they find out you have skates (let alone know how to use them)!!! I thought I was in luck when I made it clear, "no I don't play hockey, I don't even have equipment", but to no avail, they even had that figured out in advance!! So here I am, on the other side of the 'Staff vs Grad's' hockey game and I have to honestly admit.... I'M HOOKED!! Now I understand... the energy, the competition, the adrenalin... Just you wait, though, next Christmas, when I need singers in my carol choir, its payback time!! I might just put those skates back on and as I check you into the boards, I'm gonna ask you to sing in my Christmas choir!!
Thanks Grads, that was a great game!!

From dogsledding to skijorring! Yes even that came to Houston!
Date: Jan 7, 2010
Entry: Ski whatting you might say? Several years back Houston was fortunate to have a resident that was keen on dogsledding. He organized some awesome dogsled races here for a few years running. Sledders came from far away to enjoy the trails he made up at the expansive dungate meadows just a few miles out of town. Unfortunately he moved from town ...but left with us some great memories of the dogsled races! I enjoyed them so much I trained my golden retriever to pull me on my cross country skis this is known as skijorring. Oh what fun we used to have ...unfortunately my dog has passed away. But I do now have a new dog that I am hoping to train some day soon as well!
