Houston in the Fall
Date: Oct 23, 2009
Entry: Houston in the fall is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather is made for hiking. Not too cold, not to hot, with the smell of fall in the air. Leaves have turned colour and a soft wind has them drifting to the ground. Walking in the early morning with the sun rising is the best. The air is crisp and has bit of bite to it just to make you aware that winter is on its way. The mountains off in the distance has fresh snow and it is creeping lower and lower. The community has many trails which are well used by its two legged & four legged residences. It is great way to start any day.

shiny paper, shiny paper, what to do with shiny paper?
Date: Oct 11, 2009
Entry: For any hard core (or beginner) home recycler, shiny paper is a conundrum of sorts. It doesn't fit with newsprint, shouldn't go with office paper... (doesn't even burn well, if you use wood to heat your home!!) WHAT TO DO WITH SHINY PAPER??!!
One Houston woman, on a missions trip to Africa this spring, was inspired by a group of African women who have found a useful purpose for themselves and for shiny paper. They have founded an organization that makes the most beautiful beads out of rolled up pieces of shiny paper... well, sort of... handmade beads, sold all over the world, creating employment for the women of the organization, drawing them out of poverty, empowering with them a purpose, and a use for that otherwise useless shiny paper.
Your chance to learn the same skill will be coming soon to Houston, as this lady will be teaching a course on how to make beautiful beads out of that nasty shiny paper!! Keep your eyes peeled and start saving your shiny paper now!!

Olympic fever brought to you by your local banking institution!!
Date: Oct 10, 2009
Entry: This spring, as part of the RBC torch tour, Houston locals were treated to cake with an Olympian and a chance to have pictures taken with the torch! Even the RBC mascot bear was there for the celebration!! This young man , delegated to represent BC athletes on this part of the tour, was a delight to visit with. It was his first time to travel in the province outside of the lower mainland and the Okanagan... he was impressed at how large the province was and was hoping to see his first moose along our stretch of highway!! It was interesting to hear his story of participating in the Beijing Olympics with Canada's field hockey team. What a wonderful opportunity to use his experiences to inspire young athletes to pursue their dreams with all their heart!
Thank you for coming!!

Care for those we love...
Date: Oct 8, 2009
Entry: After many years of research and lobbying governments at all levels for those in our community who need medical care, Houston is VERY proud to announce the expansion of our community health care facility to include residential care beds for seniors!! Work on the facility began this summer and will hopefully be up and running in the very near future! Up until now, any member of our community who needed extended or palliative care had to leave the community of which they were a part and reside in a neighbouring community. For anyone who has been in this situation, it is incredibly distressing, but especially for our seniors. It has been very difficult for them, as loved ones, who are sometimes not overly mobile, are left behind. Not anymore! Now the elder members of our community will be able to continue to be a vital part of their social structure and they, as well as the rest of us in the community, will benefit from their availability!
As a bonus, the 'residents' of that part of the Health Centre that was demolished to build this care facility were relocated across the street... to a newly reconstructed ambulance station!!

"when you're all alone, and you pick up the phone, who you gonna call...?"
Date: Oct 8, 2009
Entry: well, if you are one of our seniors... the VAN of course!! For many years now, Houston's seniors have been able to get out and about, even if they can't drive themselves anymore. Privately fundraised and run by volunteers (some of whom are seniors themselves), this essential source of transportation equals freedom for those elders in our community who need to go somewhere. Whether its group heading to the next town to celebrate the birthday of a fellow senior Houstonite who is in the hospital or an extended care facility in the neighbouring town, or a senior who has a doctor's appointment locally... the van is almost always available to move you where you want to go!

Houston Senior's Activity Centre
Date: Oct 8, 2009
Entry: For the seniors, this building is a landmark. It is a place to gather, socialize, play, and learn. For the rest of the community, it is a place to come and enjoy the company of our community elders. There are activities for everyone here, from carpet bowling to crib, pool to pc's, sing-alongs at the piano (on occasion), the fundraiser breakfasts and lunches, and many more...
Our seniors are active, involved in volunteer positions in almost every aspect of our community. They are involved in associations outside of our community. They help themselves, they help others, they are a wonderful group of people! Thank you, seniors!!
