Swimming with an Olympian

Entry: On April 4, 2009 Olympic Swimmer, Ryan Cochrane - medalist at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games swam at the Houston Leisure Facility. He was a huge inspiration to the Houston Aquatic Club as well as all the spectators. He brought his story and dedication to his sport, to our community and made the Olympic Games real and attainable for all our sports minded kids! He said he didn't start swimming until the age of 10! 10 years later, he's at the Olympics! Ryan brought the Olympic spirit to Houston and we are truly thankful!! Thanks Ryan, you are a real inspiration!

Nordic challenges

Entry: Just 5 k south of our community we have world class cross country ski trails with access to the Alpine on skis or snowshoes. Come out and enjoy the sun, snow, scenery and sweat! Join us, there's always someone to share the experience with or if you are into the solitude, you may just catch a glimpse of the many lynx, the odd moose and numerous rabbits that inhabit the area.

China Knows Hike

new to Houston

Entry: I recently moved to Houston to serve the community as CAO of the District. I have encountered so many people locally that are enthusiatic about their excellent new pool, well maintained arena, extensive parks and playing fields, it is inspiring. I visited the cross country ski trails that were established and are maintained by volunteers - that facility rivalled any that I have used from Ottawa to Whitehorse.

Entry: This spring I had the opportunity to introduce a 'movement to music' program to the community. We had eight of the cutest little wanna-be dancers you've ever seen, hopping, marching, twirling with ribbons, swooping and swirling with scarves, all in time to the music! Thanks kids, you were fantastic, and I had a great time!!

Get out there with the kids!

Entry: I am going to encourage everyone to get out and be active. Walk, run, ride a bike, play tag with the kids, jump on the trampoline or swim at the pool. Play soccer, tennis or baseball with the kids - just to get out and get active. We will enjoy the beautiful scenery that Houston has to offer.

Entry: I am going to get the word out about the importance of accessiblity in our community. I am going to try and get our community (which has zero accessabilty to our playgrounds) to build an accessable playground so our community members with mobility issues can also get out, be active and enjoy our beautiful outdoors. Mothers with stroller, grandparents with walkers, children in wheelchairs - they all need a place to play!

Our New Swim Club!

Entry: The Houston Aquatic Club started officially in January of 2009. In March we attended our first swim meet in Smithers where the team got thier first taste of competition! Swimming is very sportsman-like - there is no better way to stay in shape and have FUN!! We are proud to be a part of such a great sport - come and join us!

Entry: Swimmers at the Houston Leisure Facility are working toward the goal of either swimming across Babine Lake (153 km) or across the Bulkley River (253 km).
Swimmers work at their own pace and log their kilometers as they go!
In celebration of the 2010 games, swimmers are also challenging themselves to swim 2010 laps of the pool!

Pleasant Valley Community Market

Entry: H.O.P.E. (Healthy Options for People and the Earth) organized an outdoor community market last year to provide local producers a place to sell their fruits, vegetables, meat, and handmade items. It was so succesful we're starting indoors this March 21st and will move outdoors again when the weather is warmer. Lots of family fun, community building and access to fresh, healthy, local produce.
